Established in 2001, the Dot NAME generic top-level extension is the single TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already registered third-level domain names remained online.
